Abstract

This article aims to present a theoretical analysis of the relationship between the concepts of disability and learning difficulties. The topic is situated within the field of Special Education, considering current debates on diversity in the educational context and the different ways of understanding the difficulties faced by students in the learning process. It proposes, from a critical perspective, a new approach to this relational condition. The analysis indicates that, although learning difficulties are traditionally considered a type of disability, it is possible that the relationship between these two concepts is actually inverse. There is a need to rethink the conceptions that have been used so far regarding individuals with special needs in the school context, as well as the role of Specialized Educational Support (SES) in promoting their full development. As a methodological procedure, a bibliographic research with a qualitative approach was adopted, based on the analysis of authors who discuss the theme. It is concluded that it is necessary to rethink traditional concepts in order to seek a more appropriate understanding of learning difficulties in the Brazilian educational context.
